An American’s Response to John McCain

To the distinguished Senator from Arizona,

This blog is a riposte to your letter printed in Pravda today. I realize your letter was penned in response to Vladimir Putin’s rather polite chastising editorial printed in the New York Times on September 11th. I also realize his soft condemnation of American Exceptionalism ruffled your feathers, as my Großmutter used to say, so therefore you felt it incumbent upon you to write a reply. However, this reply clearly was not meant for the everyday Russian that you say you are such a fan of, or else you would have picked a publication more popular among Russians; such as the Moscow Times. You chose Pravda as a definite insult to their Communist past. By the way Senator, as puerile and inerudite as your letter was, I will save the ad hominem attacks until the end. I believe a little “fact checking” is in order first.
You stated:

I am pro-Russian, more pro-Russian than the regime that misrules you today

This is not only disingenuous, it’s an outright lie. How can you be more pro-Russian than a president that was born there and has raised Russian economy out of the dregs that was fertilized by Western puppet Yeltsin?{1} You are a product of cold war hatred and mistrust of the Russians; and denial of it is again, a lie.
This next entire paragraph Senator was frankly repulsive. You wrote:

I make that claim because I respect your dignity and your right to self-determination. I believe you should live according to the dictates of your conscience, not your government. I believe you deserve the opportunity to improve your lives in an economy that is built to last and benefits the many, not just the powerful few. You should be governed by a rule of law that is clear, consistently and impartially enforced and just. I make that claim because I believe the Russian people, no less than Americans, are endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

This is really rich rhetoric Senator. This coming from the man who helped lead the charge, and the committee, to remove the amendment that protects American citizens against indefinite detention; a clear violation of the US Constitution. (Which, need I remind you, was written to PROTECT Americans’ right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness!){2} The US economy is propped up by the Military Industrial Complex which only serves to funnel money to a few.{3} The US economy, with the crash of 2008 and subsequent bailouts, has funneled money and redistribution of wealth to ONLY the top 1% of the population.{4} In case you are unaware Senator, more than 1/6 of the US population is on food stamps or some other type of food assistance.{5} Is this the improvement of life you speak of?
Your statement here:

They don’t respect your dignity or accept your authority over them. They punish dissent and imprison opponents. They rig your elections. They control your media. They harass, threaten, and banish organizations that defend your right to self-governance. To perpetuate their power they foster rampant corruption in your courts and your economy and terrorize and even assassinate journalists who try to expose their corruption.

This represents the quintessential definition of HYPOCRISY. It’s the most disgusting display of fallaciousness that I have ever had the displeasure of reading. I must break out my Southern-ese to say, “ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?” Do the names Thomas Drake, Barrett Brown, Michael Hastings, Bradley Manning, Edward Snowden, and Sibel Edmonds ring any bells? These are/were journalists and whistleblowers that have been persecuted under US administrations. You mentioning “rigging” elections really got a belly laugh from me. The US electoral system is a complete sham, rife with voter fraud. US courts are rampant with abuse and injustice; with case in point those abused at Abu Ghraib must pay reparations to those that abused them! Is this US justice?{6} Those organizations you refer to as “banished” must be those humanitarian NGOs, those CIA fronts that are meant to sow destabilization in a region.{7}
I believe you mentioning Pussy Riot and Sergei Magnistky was a pathetic attempt at eliciting an emotional response. From me to you Senator, Russians don’t fall for propaganda and psy-ops like Americans do. Recall they lived through Stalin era propaganda, which in comparison; your attempt fails miserably.

You wrote:

He has given you an economy that is based almost entirely on a few natural resources that will rise and fall with those commodities. Its riches will not last. And, while they do, they will be mostly in the possession of the corrupt and powerful few. Capital is fleeing Russia, which – lacking rule of law and a broad-based economy – is considered too risky for investment and entrepreneurism. He has given you a political system that is sustained by corruption and repression and isn’t strong enough to tolerate dissent.

Excuse me pot, this is kettle. Might I hop on over for a tea and some chat about the global gossip? In case it missed the distinguished Senator’s attention, this almost perfectly describes the US economy. I will add a picture reference here for you in case I am unclear.

You noted:

By allying Russia with some of the world’s most offensive and threatening tyrannies. By supporting a Syrian regime that is murdering tens of thousands of its own people to remain in power and by blocking the United Nations from even condemning its atrocities. By refusing to consider the massacre of innocents, the plight of millions of refugees, the growing prospect of a conflagration that engulfs other countries in its flames an appropriate subject for the world’s attention. He is not enhancing Russia’s global reputation. He is destroying it. He has made her a friend to tyrants and an enemy to the oppressed, and untrusted by nations that seek to build a safer, more peaceful and prosperous world.

Forgive me Senator, but wasn’t the US responsible for installing genocidal despots like August Pinochet in Chile, Suharto in Indonesia, Pol Pot in Cambodia, and Mao Tse Tung in China? Isn’t this just a tad bit sanctimonious of you? And let’s not forget your pals the genocidal, apartheid loving, land stealing, international law breaking, warmongering buddies the Israelis! Yes Senator, by this point in your “op ed”, I not only nearly lost my breakfast, but I had a raging headache; I soldiered on.

Your conclusion:

I do believe in you. I believe in your capacity for self-government and your desire for justice and opportunity. I believe in the greatness of the Russian people, who suffered enormously and fought bravely against terrible adversity to save your nation. I believe in your right to make a civilization worthy of your dreams and sacrifices. When I criticize your government, it is not because I am anti-Russian. It is because I believe you deserve a government that believes in you and answers to you. And, I long for the day when you have it

This statement is truly touching, and with that, I doubt highly if you penned it. Russian civilization and struggle is much older and harder fought than ours in the United States; and you would do well to remember that fact, Senator.

And now for the finale! My favorite! The ad hominem attacks against you, Senator. This hubris filled piece of excrement that you sent to the Russians has made me even more ashamed to be an American, if that were humanly possible. How dare you, the nepotistic,snot-nosed brat son of an Admiral who couldn’t get accepted into Annapolis on his own merit, propose to lecture Russians on ANYTHING? That same Admiral father that covered up the attack on the USS Liberty by the Israelis; which was an attempt to provoke a war between the US and Egypt. Perhaps this is where you learned to hang out with degenerates and terrorists.
You endangered lives on the USS Forrestal because you were a HORRIBLE PILOT and should have never passed Navy flight school.{8}
And I probably shouldn’t mention Dennis Johnson, a fellow POW at the Hanoi Hilton who says you were always clean shaven and your voice could be heard giving announcements over the loudspeakers!{9}
So, distinguished Senator from Arizona, on behalf of the American people, I kindly ask that you refrain from any more letters and consider retirement from US politics, before we all ask for your arrest and imprisonment for treason.
Sincerely, A Disquieted American

  1. Wall nuts McCain. He’s nuts. All those years chained to a wall in Vietnam (singing like a canary I hear)

  2. Well worded and argued response. You have put into words what I believe represent the opinion of a good majority of the people around the world.
